California Child Support

California’s Child Support Program offers free services to parents and guardians to help them meet their responsibilities to their children.

The California Child Support Division can assist with the following services:

• Establishing paternity
• Establishing, modifying, and enforcing a court order for child support
• Establishing, modifying, and enforcing an order for health insurance coverage
• Collecting and distributing child and spousal support payments

Child Support Payments

California child support is determined using guidelines established by state law. California child support guidelines are based on each parent's monthly income and the amount of time the child is cared for by each parent. The court will consider income from all sources, whether or not it is reported or taxed under federal law. The income can be in the form of money, property, or services.

Custody

The California courts may award joint or sole custody based on the best interests of the child. There is no preference or presumption for or against joint legal custody, joint physical custody or sole custody. Complete discretion is given to the court. In all cases, the court may appoint a child custody evaluator to determine the best interest of the child.

Court Orders

As in most states, court orders providing for support and custody of children are subject to change or modification due to changes in income and circumstances.
